Rock fight? Rock fight? Rock flight? Rock fight? Rock flight? Rock flight?
Colin True
00:00:08.510 - 00:00:28.652
Welcome to the rock fight, where we speak our truth, slay sacred cows, and sometimes agree to disagree. This is an outdoor podcast that aims for the head.
I'm Colin true, and joining me today, he's excited that his Dodgers beat the double A Mets and are about to play the triple A Yankees in the World Series. It's Justin Housemandhe.
Justin Housman
00:00:28.706 - 00:00:31.020
You were really given it all this morning on the.
Colin True
00:00:31.960 - 00:00:34.800
I'm pumped up to watch the Yankees lose, is what I.
Justin Housman
00:00:34.960 - 00:00:38.752
Okay, cool. That's. That's great. That's good to hear. Thanks. Thank you. You're the.
Colin True
00:00:38.816 - 00:00:41.900
You don't have any fear. Like, you have no fear, right?
Justin Housman
00:00:42.360 - 00:00:45.032
I don't. I actually don't know enough about the Yankees to have an opinion.
Colin True
00:00:45.096 - 00:00:47.640
Yeah, they suck. They beat the Royals and the Guardians.
Justin Housman
00:00:47.800 - 00:00:48.520
Yeah, that's true.
Colin True
00:00:48.560 - 00:00:48.784
You.
Justin Housman
00:00:48.832 - 00:00:56.274
That's true. They. But they have a lot of really large players on their team. Like hugely tall, strong gentlemen on that team.
Colin True
00:00:56.442 - 00:00:59.818
I don't know. I watched Juan Soto down here in San Diego for a full season.
Justin Housman
00:00:59.994 - 00:01:05.066
He's not one I was thinking of, but the Aaron judge, Giancarlo Stanton are real huge.
Colin True
00:01:05.098 - 00:01:10.170
I think judge is scary. I think Stanton is, you know, he's. He's hits home runs at the times that, like, he's not clutch.
Justin Housman
00:01:10.210 - 00:01:18.274
Let's just say I don't understand why I have to wait until Friday for the first game. Why is there a first game? Is this is like an insanely long road. What the hell am I supposed to do for the next five days?
Colin True
00:01:18.322 - 00:01:21.946
You think MLB would be like, let's have the games every day? The NFL is not playing.
Justin Housman
00:01:22.058 - 00:01:22.674
It's wild.
Colin True
00:01:22.762 - 00:01:23.890
And that's our sketchbook.
Justin Housman
00:01:23.970 - 00:01:28.846
Talking about baseball, too, with. Withdeze. Someone here who isn't really a baseball enthusiast. This is rude.
Colin True
00:01:28.878 - 00:01:42.810
Well, that's true because we also have, joining us, a surprise third chair host here on the Rock fight today. He fully admits that he sucks at everything in the outdoors, but we know one thing he doesn't suck at, and that's coming on the rock flight.
Joining us for a record six patio Connell.
PaddyO
00:01:43.710 - 00:01:55.086
Hello, everybody. And I. It's. Listen, I'm psyched to be here. I also. I do like baseball, but I'm a Cubs fan, so it's kind of like. Well, do I like baseball?
Colin True
00:01:55.158 - 00:01:58.650
Yeah, it could be worse. You could be a White. White Sox fan.
PaddyO
00:01:58.770 - 00:01:59.810
Oh, God, that's true.
Justin Housman
00:01:59.930 - 00:02:03.602
Yeah, that's true. Yeah. I apologize, Patty.
PaddyO
00:02:03.666 - 00:02:12.738
You know, White Sox fan is just a great way to show up to comiskey and like, see two pipe fitters from the south side, like wrestle over the last churro. It's not a fun time.
Justin Housman
00:02:12.834 - 00:02:14.650
I'd rather watch that than a White Sox game.
PaddyO
00:02:14.730 - 00:02:16.950
I truly, honestly. Yeah, actually.
Colin True
00:02:17.930 - 00:02:24.390
But Patty already had his, whatever, like, championship. He's got Caleb Williams in his life for the next 20 years.
PaddyO
00:02:24.860 - 00:02:29.360
That's true. I'm focusing on the. Listen, I'm focusing on the Bears right now. I'm focusing on.
Justin Housman
00:02:29.860 - 00:02:30.640
Yeah.
PaddyO
00:02:31.460 - 00:02:33.908
Thank you for having me, boys. I'm glad to be here.
Colin True
00:02:34.004 - 00:02:35.364
It's glad to have you back.
PaddyO
00:02:35.492 - 00:02:39.020
Yeah. Number six. I need a. I need a trophy. I need a jacket.
Justin Housman
00:02:39.100 - 00:02:43.740
We talked about a trophy before, Colin. This is, I mean, this is. I feel like this is on you.
Colin True
00:02:43.860 - 00:02:48.052
No, they're in. They're being manufactured delays out of China. What do you think you call a.
Justin Housman
00:02:48.076 - 00:02:59.120
Place that makes trophy? Surely a place that makes trophies has a name, right? Like it has to have a name. It's not a trophy maker like a haberdasher or a cobbler.
There's gotta be a fun, a weird name for a trophy maker.
PaddyO
00:02:59.240 - 00:03:00.920
I think it's called a truffler.
Colin True
00:03:01.040 - 00:03:02.208
That's pretty good, actually.
PaddyO
00:03:02.264 - 00:03:02.888
Yeah. Thank you.
Justin Housman
00:03:02.904 - 00:03:04.696
You guys have a trow flir in your town.
PaddyO
00:03:04.888 - 00:03:06.620
I'm sure, I'm sure.
Colin True
00:03:07.200 - 00:03:10.544
I'm always gonna call a trophy place a trophy from now on.
PaddyO
00:03:10.672 - 00:03:14.024
Have you linked to the truffler? Have you seen the truffler today, boys?
Justin Housman
00:03:14.152 - 00:03:29.530
Yeah, it's just like a, like a place with a bunch of bins from container store filled with like little plastic, like golden, like soccer players and baseball players and whatever. Yeah, and like some guy just like, just like pulls one out, just glues it to like a fake marble pedestal.
PaddyO
00:03:29.690 - 00:03:30.458
Yeah.
Colin True
00:03:30.634 - 00:03:38.910
Could also be like a weird villain in a horror film where he takes like people and makes them into trophies. He's the trophy in a world.
Justin Housman
00:03:40.090 - 00:03:40.618
Is that a thing?
PaddyO
00:03:40.634 - 00:03:42.194
I watched that movie. Yeah.
Colin True
00:03:42.282 - 00:04:14.870
But before we get into some headlines, we're gonna run through today with patio. We are gonna. We got a few housekeeping items, some programming reminders for you.

Justin Housman
00:04:15.030 - 00:04:16.822
Is this where I do it?
Colin True
00:04:16.966 - 00:04:19.814
This is the part. This is the part. We got Patty do it. Should we add Patty to this part?
Justin Housman
00:04:19.862 - 00:04:49.908
No, no, no. Patty can't read. You can email us@myrockfightmail.com. dot. That's probably the best way to send us an email because that is our email address.

Nice job, buddy. Thanks.
Colin True
00:04:50.084 - 00:04:58.828
All right, let's get into our lead topic today, which, as you can probably tell, is season two of patio sucks at. Congratulations, buddy. You made it to season two.
PaddyO
00:04:58.924 - 00:05:01.716
Oh, thank you very much. I made it through season two. It was pretty difficult.
Colin True
00:05:01.748 - 00:05:02.436
That's a good point.
PaddyO
00:05:02.548 - 00:05:09.532
Honestly, it was very emotionally and physically demanding this season.
Colin True
00:05:09.716 - 00:05:40.732
Well, we'll get to season three if that's going to happen. What's left to do? But, I mean, yeah, I binged through it. I watched every. And watching them kind of back to back were in a lot of pain for season two.
Like, season one felt like, it's like, hey, here are the fun things. You like rock climbing. That's challenging, but it's still like, whatever, right? And then, you know, fly fishing and all these things.
Everything you did in season two, I feel like I can't. Is there an exception? I mean, surfing was probably fun, but even then, that comes with its own set of challenges when you're a beginner surfer. Right.
So how did season two come together? Like, what? Talk us through, like, what you decided to feature.
PaddyO
00:05:40.876 - 00:07:28.320
Well, it's. It's funny.
Like, you know, season one, like you said, was kind of like, hey, what are the outdoor sports that patio has either talks himself out of doing or wants to be introduced to? And season two was like, hey, Patty, can you hold on for dear life during this terrible endurance challenge? That was it.
And we didn't set out to do that purposefully. It kind of just happened naturally that every episode turned into be this epic endurance challenge.
And, you know, it's just last January, we started the pre production conversations of, like, what sports we wanted to feature, what kind of characters we wanted to feature, how and where we wanted to do things. And it kind of just happened naturally that these sports came out.
And I would say, you know, my ibuprofen consumption was pretty wild as Washington, my, like, Kleenex consumption to wipe up all my tears because it was hard. This season was physically, mentally, emotionally demanding. But I do. I love it so much.
I mean, we were able to do a bunch of things that were super cool and, you know, kind of like, behind the scenes, it's like I turned 40 and I was kind of having this weird feeling about being 40 and being an athlete and like, oh, what does that mean? You know, like, can I still do rad stuff? And.
And, you know, because of this, because of the season, primarily, like, I've done so many cool things this year that I'm super psyched on. So, yeah, it's been great. It's been really great.
And the response, the audience response has been really awesome, too, which is always, always a nice little thing.
Justin Housman
00:07:28.780 - 00:07:33.040
Can we run through the sports that you picked up for season two?
PaddyO
00:07:33.460 - 00:07:36.900
Snowboarding, scheming, surfing.
Justin Housman
00:07:37.020 - 00:07:37.388
That one.
PaddyO
00:07:37.404 - 00:07:50.494
I know that one was really, really hard. Bikepacking, ultra running and what is the 6th? What am I forgetting here?
Justin Housman
00:07:50.582 - 00:07:51.710
Did you do a triathlon?
PaddyO
00:07:51.790 - 00:07:55.910
Oh, and triathlon. Oh, God. Oh, God. Well, there's probably a reason why I.
Colin True
00:07:55.990 - 00:07:59.886
Forgot that you probably handle the triathlon better. The best of all of them.
PaddyO
00:07:59.998 - 00:08:01.654
You think so? Oh, that's kind.
Colin True
00:08:01.822 - 00:08:22.706
Yeah, well, it was. I think they all. You clearly were suffering at all. But I want to get to specific stuff, too.
But, like, when you finish the try, I mean, it was challenging, of course, but it's just like, the sprint tries pretty manageable. That was all these sort of.
And I know you trained for your ultra, but of all these sports, if you're like, off the couch, the one you probably feel, if you're reasonably fit. Yeah. You'll make it through a sprint try.
Justin Housman
00:08:22.738 - 00:08:24.610
What's a sprint try? How far is that?
PaddyO
00:08:24.770 - 00:08:35.818
It's. It's a. Yeah, so it's like 750 meters, open ocean, swim into twelve mile, bike into a five k, and that's.
Justin Housman
00:08:35.954 - 00:08:39.888
What, like a month? You get like a month to do all. That's about. That's over like a month.
Colin True
00:08:40.024 - 00:08:41.392
He's doing the third, like next week.
PaddyO
00:08:41.416 - 00:08:47.180
Yeah, yeah. You take a couple weeks off in between each one. The transitions are super long.
Colin True
00:08:47.760 - 00:08:50.752
You see energy food, though, like power food the entire time.
PaddyO
00:08:50.936 - 00:09:09.610
The only thing you're allowed to eat the entire time is either gulps of ocean water and goose. So, yeah, I mean, I feel like with any kind of human who has like, a reasonable amount of fitness or likes to spend their time outdoors.
You can go ahead and, like, do that. But it was. I mean, it was brutal. Yeah, it's brutal.
Justin Housman
00:09:11.830 - 00:09:13.910
Where was that? Where was that one? Was that southern California?
PaddyO
00:09:13.950 - 00:09:15.430
That was in Long beach. Yeah.
Justin Housman
00:09:15.510 - 00:09:15.902
Okay.
PaddyO
00:09:15.966 - 00:10:00.878
Cali. Yeah. So that was. That was pretty brutal.
Like, I grew up swimming, and, you know, like, I am a porpoise in the water, but, like, I didn't train to not be tired in the water, and so I got my ass handed to me at one point. I, like, slipped over, and I was like, oh, my God. Like, just doing, like, kind of, like, a tadpole, like, swim on my back.
And I got all dizzy because I, like, you know, didn't have any point of reference. So I flip back over, literally swallowed, like, a couple pint glasses worth of ocean water in long beach.
So I'm finishing the swim freestyle, like, into the beach, and, like, dry heaving into the water, and I'm going into the bike transition. Dry heaving. It was, like, not awesome.
Colin True
00:10:00.974 - 00:10:04.224
There's a fair amount of heaving in a few of the episodes.
PaddyO
00:10:04.342 - 00:10:14.120
Yes. This. That's kind of the, like, the, like, subplot of. Of season two is, like, patio dry heaves in the outdoors.
Justin Housman
00:10:15.580 - 00:10:18.548
Have you guys actually puked from physical exertion? I've never done that.
PaddyO
00:10:18.604 - 00:10:19.052
Yes.
Justin Housman
00:10:19.156 - 00:10:20.692
Yes, you have. Yeah, I have.
PaddyO
00:10:20.756 - 00:10:21.400
Yeah.
Colin True
00:10:22.180 - 00:10:26.012
Not. I've never. I've definitely gotten some. Some retro long.
Justin Housman
00:10:26.196 - 00:10:28.708
I've never. Straight up, like, finished.
Colin True
00:10:28.724 - 00:10:34.982
Yeah. I've had friends who, like, 10 miles in.
Like, if they're ready, if it's a hot day, they'll just start puking, you know, like, on a run or something like that.
PaddyO
00:10:35.006 - 00:10:37.702
It was terrifying to be around because you're like, that's not good.
Colin True
00:10:37.846 - 00:10:39.566
Is this a defense mechanism? Are you, like a skunk?
PaddyO
00:10:39.598 - 00:10:47.662
Yeah. Your body is like, sit down. Stop moving, please. You know, it doesn't feel good. It doesn't feel good. It's not great. It's not great.
Justin Housman
00:10:47.726 - 00:11:01.490
So I think we asked you this last time, but I don't remember what you said when I said last time. I mean, when we talked about season one, but. So. Okay, so which. Which of these sports would you, like, keep in your bag going forward?
PaddyO
00:11:02.030 - 00:11:05.454
I mean, probably. Honestly, this is.
Justin Housman
00:11:05.502 - 00:11:06.602
You can't say all of them.
PaddyO
00:11:06.616 - 00:11:07.734
I was gonna say all of them.
Justin Housman
00:11:07.782 - 00:11:08.134
Yeah.
PaddyO
00:11:08.222 - 00:11:10.918
I mean, my ability to go well.
Justin Housman
00:11:10.974 - 00:11:14.422
Okay, so which one are you more likely to incorporate? Cause you obviously don't live anywhere near.
PaddyO
00:11:14.446 - 00:11:32.242
The ocean, so, yeah, probably trail running.
I mean, I've been so in love with surfing like, since I was, like, a little kid doing, you know, cannonballs in the local pool where I grew up outside of Chicago. So that was, like, really, really rewarding. And to be there with this, like, childhood hero of mine, Cassie met her.
Justin Housman
00:11:32.266 - 00:11:35.778
Yeah, that was amazing that you'd, like, seen her and stepping a liquid or.
PaddyO
00:11:35.794 - 00:12:05.708
Whatever, it was, like, so burned into my skull. Like, this human, you know, this smile and this laughter.
And then I'm sitting in the ocean with her and, like, dolphins are, like, undulating around us, and I'm like, this. What is my. Are you kidding? This is what I get to do for a job. This is hilarious and wonderful.
I mean, probably, you know, maybe like a smaller version of bikepacking. I'll stick with, you know, something a little more accessible than just getting absolutely destroyed.
Colin True
00:12:05.884 - 00:12:07.440
Did Duzer pick the route?
PaddyO
00:12:08.500 - 00:12:13.796
It was doozer and the. And the director. Yeah. And it was just like, I got so sandbagged on the first day.
Colin True
00:12:13.868 - 00:12:19.012
I mean, it almost broke me in eastern Colorado, just. And dirt roads, like, just go do, like, you know, why they.
PaddyO
00:12:19.036 - 00:13:24.420
Yeah, or something small. Like, I'm going to do like a 20 miles loop over two days, you know, rather than 75 over. Over a day and a half or two days.
And, like, the first day was just climbing from Boulder to Nederland uphill all day for like 8 hours or something. It was so awful. That was like, one of the worst days I've had outside ever.
Luckily, Doozer is super fun to hang out with in a really nice, funny guy, so that helped. But I was not so sweaty, and all I want is chimichanga. And then I shoved chimichanga in my face and then I was like, I'm gonna barf up.
Chimichanga everywhere. Like, oh, God, I'm my, like, I'm filled to my Adam's apple with, like, fried tortilla beef and I might throw up right now.
It was tough, but probably the thing that's, like, most accessible around here, you know, where I live in the roaring Fork Valley, is, you know, trail running. And that was, you know, the ultra episode was.
Was the most rewarding of all of them both, like, the actual doing of the thing and working on the edit in post production.
Justin Housman
00:13:24.580 - 00:13:26.000
What about snowboarding?
Colin True
00:13:26.340 - 00:13:31.836
Well, that's what I want to talk about. That's where you're a liar. You would do it again because, like, there's no way you would do it again.
Justin Housman
00:13:31.868 - 00:13:34.156
I haven't watched that episode, so I have no idea what happened.
PaddyO
00:13:34.268 - 00:14:01.884
I do want to try it again because I got so destroyed and didn't make it off the bunny hill. And I actually, like, my back seized up and out because I took all these, like, car wreck crashes, you know, and I'm 250 pounds.
That's a lot of man meat hitting the snow over and over again. I probably fell anywhere between 60 to 75 times over three days, and I actually had a bulge disc. That's what I find. I went to the doctor.
I went to my doctor, like, a couple days after because I was like, dude, my back is messed up.
Justin Housman
00:14:01.892 - 00:14:03.588
This is why I'm not learning snowboarding.
PaddyO
00:14:03.764 - 00:14:16.848
It was tough. So I do want to go, like, back and try it again because I was starting to really get it.
And then my back seized up, and I was like, okay, well, I guess we're done here. I can't move.
Colin True
00:14:17.024 - 00:14:34.680
So you mentioned the ultras being kind of the one, and that's like. And that one. I mean, a couple of the episodes, I mean, you were. You definitely shared some pretty personal stories. Was that.
Did that just come out through the Nate. Through the nature of the sport itself?
Was that intentional to kind of, like, share more about your history, your personal history and things like that?
PaddyO
00:14:34.800 - 00:16:29.530
I mean, it was both of those things.
I think that, you know, in pre production, you know, what we wanted to do was, in any host driven show, you want the audience to give a shit about what's happening to the person that they're watching. And so in season two, we did want to kind of, like, let people into my own world a little bit more. But I think something like ultra.
One of the reasons why I really love endurance sports is because of where it takes you emotionally. And that, for sure comes out in the ultra episode, which.
Which really, you know, felt more like we were making a short film than an episode for the season because, you know, we broke away from the conceit. Typically, it's like, okay, can patty go from zero to hero in a three day span?
Well, you can't do that with an ultra marathon, because that's a great way for, like, you know, patio sucks at not crying on his way to the hospital because he showed up for a sporting trail run with no training and, like, exploded. So, you know, we spent five months filming me doing my own five month training block.
And part of the reason that I wanted to do this was because I turned 40.
Partly it was to, like, celebrate going into my 11th year of recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction and a celebration of these things rather than, like a, oh, man, this is just super hard out here.
Like, I wanted to do something tough to remind me of the tough things that I've done before to bolster that kind of like mental, emotional, spiritual muscle of, I can continue to do tough things and I can continue to do tough, physical things in the mountains, even as a 40 year old dude. So that one was super rewarding. Really hard. But definitely, I think, is like, my favorite, not just of this season, but of the entire series.
Colin True
00:16:31.480 - 00:17:12.112
It's definitely the best episode. I would say just overall. Well, you guys accomplished. I'll give the credit to the production team and yourself, too.
The story you tell in a 22 minutes episode. So you get to the point when you are in those low places and you're kind of.
You're admitting the strength you're drawing on from your road through recovery and all these things. It was really emotional. It really was. I mean, you hit the mark and it really helped.
I mean, obviously told the story, but also, yeah, we learned a lot more about you. And, I mean, and maybe I'm biased because I've done ultra marathons too, so I kind of know those low moments in those races and it's.
It's like, it's unlike anything else, but you do pull a lot out of it, too. And when, then when you cross the finish line, it was so great. It was so that was where it was cool to be, being your home.
Justin Housman
00:17:12.256 - 00:17:12.648
Yeah.
Colin True
00:17:12.704 - 00:17:14.976
And I see a lot of folks that you knew. That was really cool.
PaddyO
00:17:15.088 - 00:18:27.968
Yeah, it was really. I mean, it was really special for me personally and gratifying for me personally.
The whole experience of training and finally doing the last bit, which is the last 40 miles, but the five months previous of doing it all, you.
It brings out a lot, I think, during the actual effort and then envisioning this thing for five months of running into my wife's arms and envisioning that for the five months of training and then for the 40 miles effort from running from crested Butte to Aspen was super powerful. And I was hopeful that that came through in the episode. And from what I've heard from the audience is that it did.
You know, that's really gratifying to make something that's like, hey, this is a personal thing and to try to make it a universal thing in the telling of the story and that, and for that to resonate with folks, it's super powerful and really gratifying.
So I'm psyched that people seem to really like that episode and, you know, it makes the five months of training, the five months of filming and thinking about it, like, all. All really worth it.
Colin True
00:18:28.024 - 00:18:33.140
Well, our audience can't see you. Cause clearly, what are you up to? Like 400 and 5500 pounds. You haven't done anything since.
PaddyO
00:18:35.600 - 00:18:51.140
I have not. I literally, like, have gone on a couple runs. I've gone to the gym a couple times, a couple bike rides, mostly.
A lot of walks, you know, but I also just came back from, like, ten days in the midwest. So I think five months of training was completely negated by ten days.
Colin True
00:18:51.440 - 00:18:53.416
How many italian beef sandwiches did you have?
PaddyO
00:18:53.448 - 00:19:00.160
Oh, I was brushing my teeth with bratwurst. It was ridiculous. You know, it was just like every day I had. I think it was great.
Colin True
00:19:03.140 - 00:19:40.902
All right, it's time. It's time for our weekly segment to make sure you are getting more out of the outdoors, because it's time for more with thermore.

But they've added the umlaut to Lole, so you know it's good. I mean, it worked for Motley Cru, so it should work for Lola, too, right? That's how you know it's a good. It's a good brand.
PaddyO
00:19:41.006 - 00:19:42.950
Oh, yeah. Very much so.
Colin True
00:19:42.990 - 00:19:46.878
These lolle. The Motley crue of outdoor apparel.
Justin Housman
00:19:47.014 - 00:19:48.894
Honestly, I think there's something there.
Colin True
00:19:48.982 - 00:19:49.986
There's something there, right?
Justin Housman
00:19:50.038 - 00:19:51.510
That's right. That's right.
PaddyO
00:19:51.930 - 00:19:52.990
Smoke it.
Justin Housman
00:19:53.570 - 00:19:55.110
Smoking in the groover.
Colin True
00:19:58.410 - 00:20:05.106
Yes, actually, there you go. There's our next rock fight article. You know, Motley Cruz songs as outdoor brands.
PaddyO
00:20:05.178 - 00:20:05.830
Yes.
Justin Housman
00:20:06.730 - 00:20:08.818
Smoking in the outhouse. That works, too.
Colin True
00:20:08.914 - 00:20:11.050
What's. Girls, girls, girls. Is it, you know, shoes.
Justin Housman
00:20:11.130 - 00:20:12.870
Shoes, shoes. Probably.
Colin True
00:20:14.210 - 00:21:58.148
These sleek and quilted joggers. Zippers have an amazing look and a fit that will keep you warm and in style.
They are water repellent and feature the added convenience of waterproof zippers on the back of each leg. But the best feature of all is what will be working to keep you warm, which is thermore eco down.
Made from 100% post consumer plastic bottles, eco down is the vegan and sustainable alternative to down feathers. And the main active ingredient in the Lola apex insulated quilted jogger, which you can find for $129 over on lonelylife.com.
and you can learn more about thermore eco down by heading to thermore.com because whether it's making amazing new garments or staying warm and safe out on the trail, you can do more with thermore. Well, let's get into some headlines.
Patti's going to sit in with us on some headlines come out of the outdoor adventure community that come out of the past couple of weeks here. The first one we have weird writing rando on national parks traveler. Last month, ultra runner Michelino.
Michelino sincere made headlines in the endurance community by setting the FKT, which is the fastest known time on the Owens Spalding route on the Grand Teton, a twelve mile, 7000 foot route that is also rated as a five four rock climb given the technical nature of the route.
Since then, it was discovered that he cut a switchback, which is forbidden by the National Park Service, and doing so comes with a $5,000 fine or six months in jail if you're caught doing that. And now rangers from Grand Teton National park have formally charged Sunseri for cutting the switchback because of how public this story has become.
And Justin Houseman is indeed that, writing Rando, who published a story on national parks travelers. So, Justin, I mean, what else? This just went up today. This is almost like breaking news for us here.
So what else can you tell us about what's happening in Wyoming?
Justin Housman
00:21:58.284 - 00:23:39.330
I mean, there's not a lot else out there other than in the piece I talk.
Sounds like, it sounds like rangers are kind of fed up with people using Teton as like a racetrack to do their own sort of personal, you know, whatever influencer, FKT, whatever, whatever we're calling self promotion things these days. And so I guess, like, Killian Journey did the same thing in 2012 and didn't get it, didn't get charged with anything. At least I don't think so.
But that sounds like that's what spurred the park service to put a bunch of signs like, do not cut these switchbacks. I guess, like the switchbacks they cut are in.
I've never, I've never climbed the Teton or really hiked or the grantee donor hiked much of it at all, so. But it sounds like the area where the switchbacks were, like, pretty big switchbacks. And it's kind of an obvious thing to cut.
And so people probably want to anyway. And it just sounds like they were particularly peeved at like the size of like, the north face. He's north, he's the north face athlete.
So that, you know, they're like just crushing it on social, trying to, trying to get their word out, and it's like, well, okay, but he can't really have you guys doing this.
And so it sounds like sincere is kind of taking the fall for something that the park service has probably wanted to do for a long time, which is, like, a little, like, slap on the wrist to influencers and anybody else, like, filming their own content out in places like this.
I mean, there's already kind of a gray area issue thing with, like, you know, you're not really allowed to go film, like, footage in national parks if it's commercial, you know, and it's like, well, the north face is sending their, it's not just the north face, but, you know, like, they're sending their photographers and athletes out and, like, kind of just, like, sort of exploiting the gray, the gray area. And so I think the, you know, park service doesn't, isn't stoked on that.
I was surprised at the size of the five, I mean, five grand or six months in jail. Like, wow.
PaddyO
00:23:39.490 - 00:23:59.874
I think, I think you should do the jail time. That's a, that's a, that. I want to totally, I want to see this dude have to, like, um, you know, like, the north face to put cameras inside the jail.
And, like, we should watch this endurance athlete, like, have to trade new ports for, like, granola bars and stuff like this.
Justin Housman
00:23:59.922 - 00:24:05.338
Do you want to, that's what I want to watch. Do you want to start a marketing agency, like, a creative? Cause this is a, this is a great idea.
Colin True
00:24:05.354 - 00:24:09.326
And if you got more of those season three. Patio sucks at the. Patio does time.
PaddyO
00:24:09.478 - 00:24:16.086
Patio. Patio does time. Yeah, there could be that. I don't literally, I don't want to be the guy in jail, you know.
Justin Housman
00:24:16.118 - 00:24:18.910
But I would, you would do great. You would do fine.
Colin True
00:24:19.070 - 00:24:49.498
It's an interesting point, though, Justin, about it kind of becoming a racetrack, right? Because, I mean, you do hear a lot of these FKT stories, especially on the teton.
And I think I've done, like, a couple of guided trips on the mountains. I did Rainier. And I'm trying to picture, like, if you're, you know, a pretty beginner, like, mountaineer, this is your big lifetime trip.
You're, like, up on the Teton and these switchbacks, and then here comes people just, like, zooming by you, right, who are like, just do this whole thing in three months. And, I don't know, it definitely ruins the experience, number one.
And I can definitely, you know, the more and more people are coming to do this, the impact is going to become greater. If this continues to not get nipped in the bud. Right.
Justin Housman
00:24:49.554 - 00:25:42.870
I'm sort of. I'm, like, of two weird minds about this, one of which is I bristle at the idea of not being able to go off trail.
I realize that there are places where it doesn't make sense to go off trail. And if it's, like, if it's a sensitive area and there's already a trail there, this is an area where it probably. You shouldn't be going off trail.
Like, presumably it's really steep, which makes erosion much worse. And if you're making little side trails, like, that's not going to help.
But generally speaking, I don't love the idea of, like, getting in trouble for going off trail. Like, I tend to feel like we should be able to do that. Like, where I live in the watershed area of Mount Temple Pius, you can.
You're not, like, technically illegal to go off trail, but if rangers see you, like, chasing off trail, they'll, like, stop the truck and, like, kind of yell at you. It's like, well, I feel like we should be able to kind of walk around, like, in nature without it being on a trail.
So there's a little part of me that's like, I don't love the idea of offshore hiking being illegal in certain places, but this sounds like it's a place where it makes all the sense in the world for it to be illegal.
PaddyO
00:25:43.210 - 00:26:11.570
Yeah. I mean, if the user amount is as gnarly as a place, like, you know, like, the Tetons, like, I totally understand why they would want to do this.
You know, like, I mean, I'm assuming the grand gets, you know, an insane amount of visitors.
So if you have just people, like, constantly just making social trails, like, it's going to turn into a completely trampled wilderness, and nobody wants that.
Colin True
00:26:12.670 - 00:26:18.158
Yeah. Do you think sinceres puts it on his expense report, the $5,000 fine to the north face?
Justin Housman
00:26:18.254 - 00:26:19.890
I'm sure the north face is paying it.
PaddyO
00:26:20.430 - 00:26:25.862
I would hope so. I would love to find out who pays it, where the money.
Justin Housman
00:26:25.926 - 00:26:26.542
Journalism.
PaddyO
00:26:26.646 - 00:26:32.480
I'll do some journalism. Lemon journalism. Also ask him if. Just do the six months in jail, dude.
Justin Housman
00:26:33.980 - 00:26:38.404
Such an amazing north face project, right? Just really leaned into that comes out.
Colin True
00:26:38.412 - 00:26:40.068
Of Disney plus, like, they make, like.
Justin Housman
00:26:40.084 - 00:26:42.880
A sleeping bag, like the jail edition, you know, and it's like.
PaddyO
00:26:43.620 - 00:26:48.556
Yeah. And that would make sense for, like, you know, like, we play different. We go to jail. Yeah. You know?
Justin Housman
00:26:48.708 - 00:26:50.908
Yeah, we. Yeah. We're not afraid.
Colin True
00:26:50.964 - 00:26:53.520
Just the black and white stripes on all the products that are.
PaddyO
00:26:54.140 - 00:26:56.920
We do the time. We play different, you know what I mean?
Justin Housman
00:26:57.360 - 00:26:59.152
They're probably listening to the show, the.
PaddyO
00:26:59.176 - 00:27:00.232
New north face shank.
Colin True
00:27:00.296 - 00:27:01.360
Someone over there, you know what I mean?
PaddyO
00:27:01.400 - 00:27:03.340
Like a Gore Tex shank or something.
Justin Housman
00:27:04.520 - 00:27:10.576
I don't think there's a lot of shanking going on in the Jackson area jail, but maybe. I mean, there might be actually.
PaddyO
00:27:10.688 - 00:27:11.952
Yeah, not now.
Colin True
00:27:12.096 - 00:27:38.836
All right, well, next story we had last month, a group led by Jimmy Chin, speaking of the north face, found some of the remains of famed mountaineer Andrew Sandy Irvine on the Rongbuck glacier, just below Mount Everest's north face. Irvine's foot, sock and boot were discovered emerging from the ice.
And while there will be DNA testing to confirm the identity of the remains, it is undoubtedly part of George Mallory's climbing partner lost in the famed 1924 expedition because the sock had ac Irvine stitched onto it.
Justin Housman
00:27:38.948 - 00:27:39.244
Right.
Colin True
00:27:39.292 - 00:27:54.908
I mean, this. This story's been out for a little while. We haven't had a chance to talk about it yet, Justin. So that's why I want to add it to the outline today.
But the only question I have for you guys is how insanely tough were mountaineers back then? Or how soft are they now?
Cause when you look at the boot that they found, this looks like something you'd see, like, a barista wearing at my favorite coffee shop.
PaddyO
00:27:54.964 - 00:27:55.204
Yeah.
Colin True
00:27:55.252 - 00:27:58.336
And this dude is like, tromping around like, 28,000ft.
Justin Housman
00:27:58.468 - 00:28:03.720
Pay a lot of money to get stomped on by people wearing boots like this. Like an underground nightclubs.
PaddyO
00:28:03.840 - 00:28:04.224
Holy.
Colin True
00:28:04.272 - 00:28:05.752
There's another patio. Sucks at you.
PaddyO
00:28:05.816 - 00:28:07.384
Holy. Holy hell.
Colin True
00:28:07.432 - 00:28:08.020
What.
PaddyO
00:28:08.360 - 00:29:02.638
What kind of weird back rooms of the Internet are you spending time? Jesus. I don't like, I don't know, like, who is, you know, more hardcore, like, today or.
Or, you know, in the yester years, but this, like, this is objectively wild that these dudes just were, you know, I mean, they're like, had like a length of rope that you would now, like, find on, like a tire swing and, like, wing tips. And they're like athletic trousers which were just like, thick wool. I mean, there's bonkers. I do hope.
I hope to God that these guys have cameras rolling and are making a film about this because I'm sure they did one of the most interesting stories to have in the outdoors in such a long time. And I like, I can't believe, like, his initials, like, his name was so legible.
Justin Housman
00:29:02.734 - 00:29:05.254
It's like, super legible. The photos, like, bing.
PaddyO
00:29:05.422 - 00:29:11.486
Like, this is like, if it was a Hollywood movie, if Hollywood produced this movie, you'd be like, fuck off.
Colin True
00:29:11.558 - 00:29:12.694
Seriously. Yeah.
PaddyO
00:29:12.782 - 00:29:15.294
Like, these are the underpants of Patty O'Connell.
Colin True
00:29:15.342 - 00:29:18.370
Like, are you, like, back from Summer Camp Irvine?
PaddyO
00:29:19.510 - 00:29:20.902
But it's like, it's so.
Justin Housman
00:29:21.006 - 00:29:25.474
It's so. Are we labeling our clothes? Do you have any clothes that have your name on them?
PaddyO
00:29:25.522 - 00:29:47.674
Yes. Oh, I Sharpie. I sharpen my name into clothes all the time. I mean, yes.
If you spend any time in a mountain town and you hang up your, like, very expensive, you know, jacket in the bar, you know, maybe you should have spent a little, like, as a 20 year old, you should have spent time with people who were, like, eating gorp for every meal and blacking out in bars on Main street because they.
Justin Housman
00:29:47.682 - 00:29:49.530
Were just grabbing random jackets.
PaddyO
00:29:49.570 - 00:29:53.590
And you're like, that jacket has my name in it, bro. Give me that jacket.
Justin Housman
00:29:54.750 - 00:29:58.570
A lot of people don't know. That's why. That's why Sandy Irvine had his name in his, because he was.
Colin True
00:29:59.230 - 00:30:01.046
Mallory's just getting him drunk all the time.
Justin Housman
00:30:01.118 - 00:30:01.654
Yeah.
Colin True
00:30:01.782 - 00:30:06.462
That's how he got him to go up the mountain in the first place in those shitty boots. It's like, hey, man, keep trying.
PaddyO
00:30:06.646 - 00:30:10.806
It's wild that this is, like, this has happened. I mean, this is.
Colin True
00:30:10.878 - 00:30:11.610
Oh, yeah.
PaddyO
00:30:12.070 - 00:30:30.390
And like, any. Any article that you read when you're hearing about, like, the actual moments of it, like, it's.
I hope to God that there's a film that comes out of this because it's just. It seems so wild and rich with story and there's so much history here. This is super cool. Super cool.
Justin Housman
00:30:30.730 - 00:30:58.052
We published an account from Conrad anchor, and I forget who else was on it when they found Mallory. I don't know if it was voice recordings, I guess it must have been.
It was like, a transcript of them trying to figure out how to get down to the body and confirming that it was Mallory. It was pretty powerful. That was in, like, I don't know, a few issues back. So. Yeah, I'm sure something like that would be pretty incredible.
But, I mean, if Chin's there, there's got to be video, right?
Colin True
00:30:58.116 - 00:31:12.620
Hopefully it does confirm, though, we've talked about this on the show before, justin, that, like, there's no scarier place in the entire world than Mount Everest at any point. There's, like, a dead body. There's bodies, piles of shit. Here's a foot. It's just. There is no weirder, scarier place than Mount Everest.
Justin Housman
00:31:12.700 - 00:31:36.428
Yeah, it is kind of strange how people who otherwise probably are never in contact with anything like that otherwise are just like, oh, here's a human foot coming out of the snow. I mean, if I saw, like, a foot just around, I don't care how old it is, I'd be pretty, like, wigged out for a while.
And, like, climbers that are just like, you hang a left at that, like, corpse, you know, it's just. And they're just like, green boots or.
Colin True
00:31:36.444 - 00:31:38.364
Whatever, yellow boots or whatever the guy's name is.
Justin Housman
00:31:38.412 - 00:31:46.600
It'd be like. It'd be like if you're paddling out for surf somewhere and, like, the, like, decaying bodies that have been eaten by sharks in the area.
Just like, on the beach around, and you're just like.
PaddyO
00:31:47.280 - 00:31:49.760
This conversation is making me feel unwell now.
Colin True
00:31:49.920 - 00:32:35.542
Yeah, well, we established on your tv show you throw up a lot, so we got to. We should move on. Well, let's keep the positive stories going here. By a new deep dive into mosquitoes and black flies that was on Explorer's web.
It talks about the habits and history of two notorious outdoor tormentors.
For example, a mosquito can drink up to three times its body weight in blood, but it would take more than a million bites to drink all of the blood in an adult human. But did you know black flies, they won't bite when indoors, so if they're in your tent or house, they're actually become a non issue.
That's interesting. But I mean, Patty, let's just ask, if we ask you, is there a bigger deterrent than going out to going outside than biting insects?
Like, I'll watch, like, a pct through hike videos and think it looks cool until I see them all. Like, in full body netting. I'm like, I don't want any part of it.
PaddyO
00:32:35.646 - 00:33:12.834
The nets, head to toe nets. Like, body suit nets. Yeah, I would say. Especially considering my blood type is sausage gravy. Like, bugs love me. I absolutely.
I would rather deal with rain. I rather deal with wind crazy sideways grapple, like, on a ridgeline than bugs. I once did a gigantic hike of the white rim trail.
And, like, on our closer, I think it was like second to last day. We were getting closer to, like, green river, right? We're getting closer to, like, stagnant water as well.
Colin True
00:33:12.882 - 00:33:13.186
Right?
PaddyO
00:33:13.258 - 00:33:29.706
And the amount. I've never seen a cloud of bugs like this. I mean, it was like pterodactyl sized bugs that were coming to attack us. And it was.
I mean, we were also hiking at, like four in the morning because. Or like two in the morning.
Colin True
00:33:29.818 - 00:33:33.250
I'm in Utah because it was the middle of summer.
Justin Housman
00:33:33.290 - 00:33:35.210
Would not think of bugs there at all.
PaddyO
00:33:35.290 - 00:34:01.942
But point. Point being, like, we were hiking in, like, 115 degree heat at, like, 02:00 a.m. like, it was insanity.
Like, you could, like, literally boil water on the rock. It was brutal, and I'd rather deal with that than these bugs. Like, bugs? No, thank you.
It is the worst, I think, number one deterrent to doing hardcore things outside or any core things outside would be bugs.
Colin True
00:34:02.126 - 00:34:02.566
Yeah.
Justin Housman
00:34:02.638 - 00:34:22.656
It's the only thing. It's the only thing I've encountered that ends a trip, like, prematurely.
Like, I've never had, like, an injury and had to leave or anything like that, but, um, I have left. I have straight up left, like, a backpacking trip because there were too many bugs. Just like, I'm done. Like, and, like, I would. I agree.
It could have snowed unexpectedly. I would have dealt with it. It could have.
PaddyO
00:34:22.688 - 00:34:23.296
Yeah, I.
Justin Housman
00:34:23.328 - 00:34:40.702
You know, I've had to, like, break into my own bear canister before because, like, if the lid wouldn't come off and I would, like, you know, like, I'm not going home. I'm figuring this out. You know, like, burn the thing open to get into the food. Like, I've done.
I've had lots of, like, random things, like, break a boot and just, like, well, one boot, one sandal. But, like, yeah, bugs. I would leave. I. I would just go home, for sure.
PaddyO
00:34:40.766 - 00:34:51.422
Same. Which is hilarious. That a little itty bitty thing, like, can.
That can be the, like, the, like, jenga piece that topples your, like, outdoorsy grittiness.
Justin Housman
00:34:51.486 - 00:35:08.398
Also something that you don't think about that much. You know, you'd be like, yeah, I'll be like, okay, this is. I'm gonna go here. I'm gonna go. This is where I'm gonna go. Fuck bugs.
You're like, never mind. Just. I can't. Like, this is bug time. Can't go. This is time for them. It's their time. It's. That's their time. You know, they get. They deserve it.
Like, I don't know. What are they doing in the winter? Nobody knows.
PaddyO
00:35:08.494 - 00:35:25.942
I actually woken up in my tent before, like, scratching my, like, feet and ankles raw because of bug bites. Like, I just did that in my sleep, and I was just like, that's. I'm sad. I'm so sad right now that there's no way for me to have any fun here.
Colin True
00:35:26.126 - 00:35:42.310
I'd actually like to. If there's anybody out there listening who they really can deal with bugs, I would like. Cause I agree with everything you guys are saying.
And if I give, even if someone says, hey, it's probably gonna be pretty bad buggy wise. Like, let's go somewhere else. Like, I don't even wanna, like, risk dealing with the bugs. So if there's anybody that's like, nah, it's okay.
I'm happy to back my.
Justin Housman
00:35:43.250 - 00:35:44.418
Nobody like that. Exactly.
Colin True
00:35:44.514 - 00:35:45.642
People manage it better than.
PaddyO
00:35:45.666 - 00:35:52.754
I would love to hear the person who's like, I'd rather deal with rain. I'd rather deal with bugs than rain or snow or something. Like, well, there are.
Justin Housman
00:35:52.802 - 00:36:04.066
I mean, I do think that there. I've read things before about, like, some people are just, for whatever reason, less, like, they don't get as irritated by the, by the biting.
But that's the thing. Biting sucks, but I also just don't want them.
Colin True
00:36:04.138 - 00:36:25.208
I just don't want the flying on my face. It's just. Yeah, I. Yeah, yeah. Well, Myrock played@gmail.com if you're that person.
All right, well, we got one more story before we get into our parting shots, and we're pretty excited because Pickle court Pickleball corner is back. It's been a minute since we had Pickleball corner on, and there's only one reason I want to bring this up, but the art.
Justin Housman
00:36:25.224 - 00:36:28.176
There's an article pickleball sound in when you do that. Like, the sound of.
Colin True
00:36:28.208 - 00:36:30.688
We need to, like a dink. Dink. Yeah.
Justin Housman
00:36:30.744 - 00:36:31.380
Yeah.
Colin True
00:36:31.920 - 00:36:50.020
Last week was announced that indoor, indoor pickleball proprietor, the Pickler, is expanding into Canada, where they plan to open 65 locations across the country, starting in Toronto in 2025. Patty, you're about to be a father. Would you send your child to a place called the pickler?
PaddyO
00:36:50.600 - 00:37:00.232
Only because I want a t shirt that says that. I think. Yes, absolutely. I think the name the pickler is the best thing to happen to the outdoors.
Justin Housman
00:37:00.296 - 00:37:01.600
Is it better than the trophy?
PaddyO
00:37:01.640 - 00:37:02.944
The invention of Gore Tex?
Colin True
00:37:02.992 - 00:37:08.528
Like, this is the pickler works with the truffler, right? That's like toady or something.
Justin Housman
00:37:08.704 - 00:37:10.872
After you win at the pickler, you go to the truffler.
PaddyO
00:37:11.016 - 00:37:33.426
Yes, exactly. See, I'm way into this. I'm pro pickleball. I think it is a hilarious and fun game. I grew up playing tennis, and I love pickleball. It's hilarious.
I need to go back to school and learn more about math before I know how the scoring works in pickleball. But just playing, like, smacking that little wiffle ball around is so much fun. Fun.
Justin Housman
00:37:33.498 - 00:37:38.390
Do you, you played tennis to, like, how seriously did you play?
PaddyO
00:37:38.770 - 00:38:13.750
When I was a kid, like, it probably every summer before I went to high school and started playing, like, football on lacrosse. Okay. But, like, we would basically play pickleball, but we called it dink. We would just like.
Yeah, and it was a way to work on, like, your volley, like, your network, you know, and we would just do that. So it's, like, not super crazy, this, like, oh, like, shrunken version of tennis.
We would just do that, and we would have, like, tournaments, dink tournaments. Like, when we were little, it was super fun. So, yeah, I'm pro pickleball. I think they should do more stuff. Like the pickler. I want pickle juice.
I want, like, extreme pickling. Like, I want.
Colin True
00:38:14.290 - 00:38:17.682
I'm sorry. It's. I think diddler. That's all I hear.
PaddyO
00:38:17.786 - 00:38:20.282
That's why it works so well. This is great.
Colin True
00:38:20.386 - 00:38:21.834
Are you pro diddler?
PaddyO
00:38:22.002 - 00:38:37.870
I'm pro. Weird. Funny names. And pickleball by itself is just like, I love that a sport was invented and they were like, what do we call it? Pickleball?
Yeah, absolutely. That's great. First shot. Like, one shot, one kill there. Thanks a lot for naming this.
Colin True
00:38:38.250 - 00:38:46.170
It sounds like that a sport where you can wear crocs playing it. So I don't know how you make these two views line up that you're anti crocs, but pro pickleball. I feel like there's. There's a. There's a vendor.
PaddyO
00:38:46.210 - 00:38:51.830
Somebody showed up to the pickleball court in crocs. They'd be like, this tracks. I'm cool with it.
Colin True
00:38:52.290 - 00:38:54.826
This is how crocs are going to win you over. They're going to wear you down.
PaddyO
00:38:54.938 - 00:39:56.252
Yeah, probably. Probably. I'm pro. I'm pro pickleball. I like, I mean, you guys should play. It's hilarious. It's the funniest thing.
You can't not giggle while you play it. I think it's more hilarious to, like, watch people, like, try very seriously. No, I think. I think trying hard.
I'm all about trying hard, but I'm not about, like, being overly serious about this objectively, ridiculously hilarious sport.
I mean, this is, to me, when people, like, the idea that this is, like, a professional sport or, like, taken very seriously is, like, when you watch, like, on ESPN 57 or whatever, like, like, a tetherball. Like, professional tetherballing. Or, like, there's, like, a professional cornhole. Yeah, there is, like, bags league, which is hilarious to me.
I mean, again, great game. Super fun. Hilarious time to have with your friends and family playing this backyard Olympic sport. But. But it's a game, and it should be ridiculous.
And should not be taken seriously.
Colin True
00:39:56.436 - 00:40:01.228
All right, we're going to take a quick break, and then we'll be back with our parting shots.
PaddyO
00:40:01.364 - 00:40:02.240
Pickler.
Colin True
00:40:04.220 - 00:40:52.060

Chris DeMakes
00:40:53.880 - 00:40:56.300
It's time for the party shot.
Colin True
00:40:58.320 - 00:41:05.696
All right, we're back with the parting shot. Now, Patty, you're our guest. You can go first. Or do you want to hear how we do our parting shots before you dig into yours?
Or do you want to go first?
PaddyO
00:41:05.808 - 00:41:09.968
Oh, can you do yours first? I want to see kind of what the vibe is, what the tone is.
Colin True
00:41:09.984 - 00:41:11.328
Justin, you want to go or you want me to go?
Justin Housman
00:41:11.384 - 00:41:13.540
You go. You got a whole long thing written out here.
Colin True
00:41:14.310 - 00:42:35.906
All right, so my parting shot today is I'm demanding justice for Waldorf and Statler.
Last week, Justin and I were at an outdoor media event, and twice we found ourselves in the enviable position as sitting in the balcony of two different buildings, looking down at all the other attendees. And I repeatedly kept trying to make Statler and Waldorf jokes to Justin and anyone else that would listen.
And it's sad and embarrassing because no one got them, mostly for me, that it was sad and embarrassing. So I'm here to reclaim the legendary status of the Muppet.
Statler and Waldorf, who are designed by Bonnie Erickson and made their debut on the Muppet show. During the year of my birth, 1975, Statler and Waldorf were named after two landmark New York City hotels, the Statler Hilton and Waldorf Astoria.
They've appeared in all the major Muppet movies and shows and movies. They split duty for the ghosts of Jacob Marley and the Muppets Christmas Carol, a beloved film. Not really one of my favorites, but still, I get it.
And they were adults on Muppet babies. They were in Pixar shorts.
They've been in a Weezer video they've also appeared on WWE Raw and Family Guide, and most of all, they're one of the funniest parts of one of the funniest franchises ever. Their names and jokes are iconic and deserve to be recognized as suck. I said suck. As such, I'm here for justice.
All of you need to know and respect Statler and Waldorf, if for no other reason, so that I can make jokes about it when I'm sitting in a balcony with my friend Justin Helsman.
Justin Housman
00:42:36.018 - 00:42:36.506
Aw.
Colin True
00:42:36.618 - 00:42:37.910
That's my parting shot.
Justin Housman
00:42:39.570 - 00:42:46.244
I know we're not supposed to talk about the pat, though. I know we're not supposed to talk about the parting shots, Colin, but I have to ask Patty, do you know what the fuck he's talking about?
PaddyO
00:42:46.332 - 00:42:49.372
Uh, yeah, only because I love. I love the Muppets, but I wouldn't.
Justin Housman
00:42:49.396 - 00:42:50.500
Own their name, though, right?
PaddyO
00:42:50.580 - 00:42:58.356
That's. That's like you. I feel like, um, with any joke, if the. If the audience doesn't get it, it's more on the joke teller.
Colin True
00:42:58.468 - 00:42:59.252
Yeah, it is.
PaddyO
00:42:59.356 - 00:43:06.500
Than the audience. I mean, the setup, because they're. It's kind of a deep. You know, it's not Miss Piggy or Kermit. So it's kind of a little bit of a deep cut.
Justin Housman
00:43:06.540 - 00:43:08.508
The deep cut for the Muppets.
PaddyO
00:43:08.564 - 00:43:14.518
But. But I do love of Statler and Waldorf, so I'll the millennials on this call. Yeah.
Colin True
00:43:14.574 - 00:43:17.862
All right. Who don't know. I'm including you, Justin. All right.
Justin Housman
00:43:18.046 - 00:43:30.366
My parting shot this week is if you're gonna make an obscure cultural reference, you know, you need. You do your. Do your homework first, I guess. Did I freeze?
Colin True
00:43:30.518 - 00:43:32.422
You froze up while you're breaking my balls.
Justin Housman
00:43:32.566 - 00:43:51.626
Fucking damn it. My parting shot was gonna be. No. No cultural. No obscure cultural references. Just generally speaking. Cause nobody. You know, it's just.
It's just awkward for everybody. I've tried to do this, you know, like. But it's just nobody. Because then you're like, you have to explain the joke. You have to explain.
And maybe they don't even have. You know, they may have no idea what the hell you're talking about.
Colin True
00:43:51.698 - 00:43:58.370
I was embarrassed. It was frustrating. I didn't like it. I wanted. So I want everyone to know who they are so I can make the joke. This is my goal.
Justin Housman
00:43:58.490 - 00:44:37.240
So I think I. My parting shot is going to be a repeat. I hope it's okay to do that, but I feel like it needs to be heard again, and I'm going to strip it down. Even.
Even more simple than the first time. Which is. Stop. Just. You don't know when someone's watching something. Stop it. Stop it. With the text messages about sporting two weeks ago.
I know, but it's happening. It's still happening. People need to. People. This is coming up now.
A lot of my text message threads where people are like, it's finally culturally coming to a head now. Where people like, look, I don't watch this shit live. Stop it. Like, it's. I have.
I'm engaged in multiple text threads right now with people that are like, dude, you've got to cut it out. I get that you love the Dodgers. Yes. And it's. It's just people need to stop doing this.
Colin True
00:44:37.320 - 00:44:42.308
That's a tough facet. They made it to the World Series. So anybody who knows you and knows you're a Dodgers fan, I'm not talking.
Justin Housman
00:44:42.324 - 00:45:00.444
About, like, the day after, but, like, you know, and it's just, it just keeps happening. And, like, people I know that don't even. They have, like, kind of aware, like, baseball, like, oh, you must be watching the Dodger game.
It's like, stop. You don't know when people are watching things. Just. Just please don't. Just please, please don't let us watch our games on our own. Time and peace.
Colin True
00:45:00.572 - 00:45:06.412
All right. That's the last time you're allowed to do that. Parting shot, though. That's it.
By the way, you did have an impact, because I didn't text you at all about sports.
Justin Housman
00:45:06.476 - 00:45:11.518
Yeah, it worked. So I'm trying. Maybe I'm just trying to spread it more. I just. I don't think people realize quite how important this is.
Colin True
00:45:11.574 - 00:45:13.570
All right, Patty, you're up. What's your party shot?
PaddyO
00:45:14.070 - 00:47:41.500
Well, friends, mine might be a little long, but I feel strongly about this. The air is getting crispy, leaves are falling, peaks are frosted, which signals the greatest time of year is quickly approaching.
That's right, ski season. And I'd like to take this opportunity to make an ask of all mountaintown folks. Can we please, please, oh, please. Dear Lord, drop the loke dog.
Localism, B's, the bumper stickers and general attitude of my life is your vacation. And I live where you remotely work is so lame and so unhelpful. Stop it. You sound like a cranky, crusty old turd.
Now, I'm not saying that mountain towns aren't in a hard place right now. It's probably the hardest it's ever been to live in the mountains. Housing insecurity, unlivable wages, work shortages, the climate crisis.
These are all very real issues. But it's completely absurd to get angry at folks for moving to and or visiting, visiting the place that you once visited and decided to move to.
It's insane and completely ego driven to think that the last time anyone should have moved to your town was the minute you arrived. You were the problem for some old, grizzled, crusty local when you moved to town. And I bet you didn't like getting told you suck by some geezer.
But patio, it's different now. It's so crowded. You don't like crowds. You are crowds, man. Walking through a door and then slamming it behind you is decidedly uncool.
And the same thing goes for the drop your wallet off on Main street and get the hell out of town mentality. That is bullshit. Mountain towns need tourism and need folks moving in.
And we need folks to help with sustainable growth policies and practices, not some bros and bras talking about how sick it used to be here. If you don't like the direction your town is headed, stop talking and start walking. Write op eds for your paper. Join community programs.
Attend town council meetings. Vote, run for office for a position in the town or the county. Do something. Change is not the problem. Resistance to change is the real issue.
Also, dont let your crustiness eff up other peoples day.
Remember to thank your frontline workers like lifties, groomers, snowmakers, patrollers, waitstaff, and everyone else who truly turned the gears of a mountain town. Localism is just blue collar nimbyism. Please dont be a goggle tanned nimby.
You may think youre being funny or helpful, like Statler and Waldorf, the muttons puppets, but you really just got something stuck up your ass. Happy winter, everyone.
Justin Housman
00:47:42.600 - 00:47:43.680
That was great, Patty.
Colin True
00:47:43.720 - 00:47:44.880
Well done. Well done.
PaddyO
00:47:44.920 - 00:47:45.944
That's my rant.
Justin Housman
00:47:46.112 - 00:47:49.320
We're going to cut little clips of that and just randomly play it in places.
Colin True
00:47:49.360 - 00:47:56.928
Yeah, that was great. And I. Yeah, no, I agree with you that the sort of, you have my your vacation is my life t shirts and those kinds of things are.
Justin Housman
00:47:56.944 - 00:48:09.214
Just like, you know what? I thought those were super cool. When I was 13 and I had lived at the beach for six months, I was like, this is fucking awesome.
Like, I need that shirt. So I'm assuming everybody that's wearing that shit has lived there for six months.
Colin True
00:48:09.302 - 00:48:15.342
Yeah, they're awesome.
When, you know, you're a poser and you're, you're afraid of people finding out that you're gonna be a poster that you're already a, it just doesn't make.
PaddyO
00:48:15.366 - 00:48:29.198
Any sense, you know, to be like. I just. It's never sat well with me. This whole thing of, like, dude, when I moved here, it was cool, and now it sucks. It's like, well, then move.
If you want to be so altruistic about the spirit of the town, move out of the town.
Colin True
00:48:29.294 - 00:48:40.778
Look at the parting shot that we got an original patio like, essay out of the parting shot today. Guys. That's a. That's a win. You've been on tv. Do your fingers still work? Are you still writing? I mean, like, you know, I always write.
PaddyO
00:48:40.834 - 00:48:42.866
That's the thing. Like, you gotta write the Vo, you know?
Colin True
00:48:42.898 - 00:48:43.714
Yeah, you gotta write the Vo.
PaddyO
00:48:43.762 - 00:48:47.258
I'm never not writing. I just have a typewriter in my brain at all times.
Colin True
00:48:47.314 - 00:49:05.610
My brain. All right, guys. Well, we can wrap it up there. The Rock Fight is a production of Rock Fight, LLC for Justin Houseman and our guest.
Our guest host, patio. I'm colin true. Thanks for listening. And he's back to take us out. Krista makes is here. He's gonna sing the rock fight song. We'll see you next time.
Rock fighters.
Chris DeMakes
00:49:13.590 - 00:50:01.110
Welcome to the rock fight, where we speak our truth, slay sacred cows, and sometimes agree to disagree.
We talk about human powered outdoor activities and big bites about to topics that we find interesting, like pop culture, music, the latest movie reviews, ideas that aim for the head. This is where we speak our truth. This is where we speak our truth. Rock fight. Rock fight. Rock fight. Welcome to the rock flight. Rock fight. Rock fight.
Welcome to the rock flight. Rock flight. Rock flight. Rock light. Rock fight. Rock side. Welcome to the rock side rock fight. Rock fight.
Colin True
00:50:03.170 - 00:50:05.570
Rock fight.
