MEET YOUR HOST....
COLIN TRUE
Colin True spent over 20 years working for outdoor brands, living in places most people only get to visit, and forming a definite opinion about the good, the bad, and ugly of the outdoor industry and our outdoor community.
After giving up the sales gigs to go deep into ultrarunning, Colin soon realized that shit was crazy hard and took waaay too long. Looking for something more sedentary between his adventures, he discovered writing, pontificating, and podcasting. (Check out LAYERS: The Rise of Dressing Down on the tab above labeled 'LAYERS'. It’s sick.)
He also discovered that most of the outdoor media sounded the same, covered the same topics, and generally was just ok. To Colin, just ok was not ok, and thus Rock Fight was born.
And yes, that is Colin in a pair of jorts. You’re welcome.

![Today on the show Colin and Justin talk about the turmoil caused by the Trump Administration's layoffs at various land management agencies.
They cover the ramifications of substantial layoffs that have left numerous employees without positions, thereby compromising the operational integrity of our national parks. The episode further examines the uncertainty that permeates the outdoor community as we grapple with the fallout from these sweeping (and ridiculous) changes.
Then the guys quickly hit a couple of items to come out of the gear world including Snow Peak entering the fly fishing space and a new way to cover up your truck bed. They also talk about the amazing video making the rounds of a humpback whale that swallowed and spit out a kayaker.
They of course wrap things up with The Parting Shot!](https://scontent-iad3-2.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.75761-15/480880402_17951094002923942_3013645145992380684_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=100&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=18de74&_nc_ohc=ekPl_FJE8MoQ7kNvgEk1dgC&_nc_oc=AdhZ9-4xEhLxvd8Hy6-CPPxsi12KML_fMuE9ar24lsrw1bD8uKplUPWqjF5C63Oi75A&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=AAaDwoyqj2NjC4PnqZtzVBF&oh=00_AYCDCq-dF-oRTy8clQ-4MPacexOLHX56iP5gfT3PwT43sg&oe=67BC1DB4)

![Today on The Rock Fight Colin is joined by Rock Fight Consigliere Eoin Comerford and Producer Dave to discuss several news stories that paint a picture about the long term health of the outdoor industry.
First they look at the recent earnings report by Newell (parent company of Marmot, Coleman, and Ex Officio, among others) which shows how the outdoor industry may be on the same path that was recently traveled by the surf industry. Eoin recaps how many iconic surf brands ended up being owned by Authentic Brands and how that past may serve as a cautionary tale for outdoor brands facing similar challenges.
Next they talk about a recent report that Dick's Sporting Goods is quietly leaving outdoor behind as it closes most of their remaining Public Land and Moosejaw locations. They talk about how this move will impact the outdoor retail landscape.
Then they dig into event news including the report that Europe's biggest summer show, OutDoor, is going on "hiatus" as well as the announcement of Outdoor Retailer's Industry Day.
Lastly it's a combined Parting Shot as the hosts weigh in on the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable's endorsement of Trump Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, as well as the organizations who co-signed that endorsement including the OIA, People For Bikes, and REI. They look at what missteps may have been made and what the focus should be going forward.](https://scontent-iad3-1.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.75761-15/479903935_17950870061923942_3660213540846048460_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=110&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=18de74&_nc_ohc=mwpt4ajCdGwQ7kNvgFXQY5-&_nc_oc=AdjA7GK2hAA6g-Czv8VafxHg7nknpIYR8nylRu7lIrfvwcRKAPFusy2_6ouvFHW94Cw&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=AAaDwoyqj2NjC4PnqZtzVBF&oh=00_AYBbK8GUdNTRVqcsVKp8VF3WuWy-Kd3IoKJPb2hyb34tuQ&oe=67BC2199)

![Are you familiar with the Greek paradox known as the Ship of Theseus? It’s a long story, but the summation goes like this:
If one replaced each plank of the Ship of Theseus with a new piece of wood every time it began to rot, there would eventually come a time when all planks had been replaced, and none would be from the original ship. Does this mean it’s still the same Ship of Theseus?
I was reminded of this paradox this past weekend when I started receiving emails and texts letting me know that sometime last week Outside, Inc. had laid off a significant portion of its editorial team.
I thought of the Ship of Theseus because, even though the logo remains the same and they still call themselves Outside, it sure doesn’t feel like the same company anymore.

![Today Doug opens the container in search of awe and finds it with Stacy Bare.
Moments of awe transcend mere experiences. They serve as pivotal junctures in our personal narratives, fostering healing and a deeper understanding of our existence. And while the outdoors is a source for awe inspiring moments, awe can also be found everywhere.

This is no ordinary Jerry, he’s a Super Jerry, an embodiment of greatness that lives entirely in their own mind. Impossibly cool, perfectly fitted, and hair quaffed for speed, Jerry Bum™ is the main character in every ski vid.
Press his thumb to hear iconic lines like:
• “I invented this trick!”
• “First tracks, every time!”
• “Siege the Day!”
• “Sorry for barfing on your bib."
But it wouldn’t be a Jerry if there also wasn’t a bunch of cheap crap for sale. With logo’d apparel (available on the website), product co-labs (available on another website), and random merchandise with clever taglines (available on the first website), there isn’t anything Jerry Bum™ can’t have made in China and sold to his millions of social media followers

Behold Jerry Bum™, the only action figure that captures the legend every Jerry thinks they are: fearless, flawless, and utterly unstoppable.
Whether shredding the gnar (bunny slope) or giving off werewolf vibes in the lodge, Jerry Bum™ is the ultimate tribute to slow motion train wrecks and self-proclaimed greatness.

![Today Doug opens the container with Chad Brown to discuss changing the narrative around conservation.
Filmmaker Chad Brown is a passionate advocate for environmental justice and founder of the nonprofit Love Is King. During this conversation he discusses the intersection of conservation and social justice, emphasizing that true conservation must recognize the sacredness of land and its cultural significance.
Chad highlights the importance of diverse voices in the conservation movement, particularly those of BIPOC leaders who have historically been marginalized. He shares insights from his latest film, Resilience Rising: Echoes of Owhyee Canyonlands, which captures the journey of five BIPOC leaders as they explore and connect with the land's deep history and significance. Chad also reflects on the healing power of nature in his own life, particularly as a veteran dealing with PTSD.
The discussion culminates in a powerful reminder that actions taken today shape the world for future generations, reinforcing the idea that love and community are essential in the fight for justice and preservation of our natural spaces.

![Today on the show, outdoor retailer Wes Allen returns to talk about the article he wrote for Rock Fight about the fallout of Altra giving REI exclusivity on the newest version of the popular Lone Peak trail running shoe.
The Altra Lone Peak Plus is the first version of the iconic trail runner to feature a Vibram outsole, and will be available exclusively at REI for five months. This move has sparked significant discussion among outdoor specialty retailers, as it raises concerns about the impact of exclusivity on independent shops and the overall dynamics in the outdoor retail market.
Wes joins Colin, outdoor industry insider Eoin Comerford, and Producer Dave to share his perspective on this move by Altra. The conversation then turns towards the recent CEO shakeup at REI as well as thoughts on gray marketed Cotopaxi products turning up at Costco.

![Today Doug opens the container with Luis Benitez to discuss the need for a National Office of Recreation.
The rise in outdoor recreation has always been a part of the American experience, with transcendentalists like Emerson and Thoreau heading to the woods for enlightenment, down to current day secularists just wanting to get away from work. The indigenous people of this continent whose lands were taken and occupied had a deep connection to these spaces and still do.
Luis joins the show to discuss the critical role of outdoor recreation departments in advocating for the outdoor community and promoting sustainable practices on public lands.
He shares his journey from guiding on Everest to becoming a prominent advocate for the outdoor recreation sector, highlighting the importance of collaboration across political lines to address shared concerns for conservation and accessibility.
The discussion also touches on challenges faced by the outdoor industry, including increasing pressure on public lands and the necessity of responsible management as more people seek outdoor experiences.
Through their dialogue, they emphasize the potential for a national department of outdoor recreation to unify efforts and further protect these vital spaces for future generations.](https://scontent-iad3-2.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.29350-15/474550550_1012463140714430_3275998559692185991_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=100&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=18de74&_nc_ohc=5pML_4Y4b1oQ7kNvgErxaxV&_nc_oc=AdgjpnYSktEnovsDjWncIvA0N3RKEtEwUCnxpYiafIIoxv9OW_ysNf_lka6supKO91U&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=AAaDwoyqj2NjC4PnqZtzVBF&oh=00_AYC6F27pyLvel1ryinFK3B6bHEZXa1T8v_Dric0ySQ6Rvw&oe=67BC2485)
